Assault On Match Officials:NNL Banishes Gateway Utd FC To Benin ,Fines Team N1m, Threatens More Sanctions If...

Gateway United Football Club of Abeokuta have been banished to Benin, Edo State capital by the Nigeria National League (NNL), to play the remaining home matches of the season for violating the league’s security rules in the last Saturday's match against the visiting Ikorodu City of Lagos which ended in a goal less draw and led to attack by some miscreants on the match officials

Apart from being banished to Benin, Gateway United were also fined N1m by the NNL, even as they are to pay N100,000 for the medical treatment of the battered referees.

With the decision, Gateway would now host both Crown FC and Osun United at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin-city

The  supporters of the Abeokuta side had last Saturday went wild against the centre referee for his ability to use his whistle and manufacture a penalty during the encounter and save the home team from the disappointing goal less draw with the visitors, Ikorodu City

Chief Operating Officer of NNL, Dr. Ayo Abdulrahaman in a statement threatened that the league board would apply further sanction  against the club, if it fails to produce and prosecute the fans who attacked the referee

Ikorodu City currently lead the Conference B log with 27 points while, Gateway United are in 5th place with 23 points.
