The one week warning strike which commenced on Monday by both Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities and Non Academic Staff Union of Universities has paralyzed activities in public universities across the country
The university workers are protesting the non-payment of their four months withheld salaries by the Federal Government for their involvement in the prolonged strike in the university system during the last Buhari administration which was later released to the members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), following the approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for payment of the withheld salaries for all workers in the Federal Universities
Edu-Biznews gathered that Senate buildings including various administrative offices on various campuses were shutdown in compliance with the industrial action
At Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Senate building and other offices were under lock and key, while non- academic staff were seen moving round to ensure strict compliance with the warning strike
The situation are the same according to reports reaching Edu-Biznews as at afternoon hours of the day-one of the warning strike from University of Abuja, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH)Yola,Federal University of Technology, Akure and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, as offices remain locked
The Joint Action Committee in a circular on Friday, dated 15th of March, 2024 signed by President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Prince Peters Adeyemi , obtained by Edu-Biznews, said that the unions were left with no option than to embark on the one week warning strike to compel government to do the needful by ensuring prompt payment of the four months withheld salaries of members which had been paid to only academic staff
On efforts made so far to ensure payment of the withheld salaries and resolve the issue peacefully before degenerating to unnecessary industrial action, the unions claimed that a letter dated 13th of February, 2024 was written to Right Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila , (Chief of Staff to the President) and Minister of Education, Prof.Tahir Mamman while another press statement was issued on 1st of March during which a 7-day ultimatum was given to address what the workers described injustice and unfair treatment, but none of the letters received response from government
