The June 12 Cultural Centre was renovated by the Ogun State Government in 2012 and named as a tribute to the man behind the June 12, 1993 presidential election. The emergence of Chief MKO Abiola as president was an expression of the aspiration of Nigerians for a socio-political renaissance, a reprieve from the decades of dictatorial military rule.
Nigerians fought valiantly for their right to choose their leaders in the wake of the infamous annulment of the elections. The resilience and courage demonstrated during the struggle etched the date, June 12 which is now recognized as Democracy Day in our collective memory.
