Ogun State Government has commenced distribution of eco-friendly, reusable sanitary towels to selected secondary school girls in the state.
The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye speaking during the flag-off exercise in Ogun Central Senatorial District, at African Church Grammar School, Ita-Eko, Abeokuta, affirmed that the sanitary towels were comfortable and convenient to use,
The distribution according to her , will reduce pressure on parents considering the economic challenges in the country.
Adeleye stated that the well-being of girl-child was one of the priorities of Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration, noting that the Ministry would continue to give necessary attention to adolescent wellness, to enable them be role models and attain enviable heights in the society.
"I want to you to know that the present administration under the leadership of Prince Dapo Abiodun is passionate with the wellbeing of girl-child, that is why he is giving you all necessary attention to keep you safe and I believe that with the distribution of this reusable pads, there will be relief on money spent on purchasing them monthly’’, she said.
She advised them to ensure routine cleaning of the product to prevent contracting germs that could cause diseases, illnesses and bad odour, pointing out that personal hygiene would boost their morale, social interaction, health status and psyche.
Contributing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Mrs. Ayotunde Lawal, appealed to the girls to maintain cleanliness and ensure that the sanitary towels were neatly cared for, noting that, ‘’cleanliness is next to godliness’’.
Earlier, representatives of the Principal of African Church Grammar School and Baptist Girls College, Mrs. Elizabeth Famoroti and Mrs. Yemisi Akinda respectively, said distribution of the sanitary towels was apt, as it would reduce money spent on purchasing disposable ones, admonishing the students to cultivate high hygiene standards.
Appreciating the government for the gesture, two of the students, Glory Olusola and Waliat Dauda, expressed joy over the initiative, promising to imbibe the culture of cleanliness to enjoy good health.
