The sales of Chinese Adire fabric which is an adulteration of the original Adire, Kampala fabrics in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital is still thriving in local markets, despite various moves by the State Government to stop and criminalize the patronage of the fake imported product at the expense of the made in Nigeria products
Findings by Edu-Biznews revealed that fake Adire fabric imported from China are in several shops at the popular Adire/Kapala Market in Itoku area of Abeokuta where such products are enjoying appreciable patronage by customers who preferred the Chinese products who are less expensive to the locally made ones
According to some of the traders, the Chinese Adire fabric whose selling price is as low as N2,500 per five yards are being patronized by customers, compare with the original Adire produced in Abeokuta, with the least selling price of N5,000 per five yards of the clothing material
Edu-Biznews also observed one of the 20 Local Governments in the state bought the imported Chinese Adire as official attire for the celebration of 2023 Christmas Carol and Service of Nine Lessons
It will be recalled that the State Government House of Assembly passed resolution banning the importation of the Chinese Adire products into Nigeria to protect the local Adire/Kapala Industry from dieing because of the ugly trend
Similarly the State Government early in December, 2023 announced its intention of proposing a bill criminalizing the sales and patronage of the imported Adire products into the country
