Ogun Govt Warns Traders Against Trading On Sideways, Drainages

Ogun State Government has warned traders who are fond of displaying their goods on sideways or drainages  to desist from blocking drainages in all marketplaces and environs, as part of measures to tackle flood and pollution and ensure a better environment

Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the State Governor on Environment and the Chairman Task Force Committee on Environment, Hon. Farouk Akintunde, gave the warning during an inspection of the state Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) to Sango-Ota and Ifo markets.

Addressing traders who obstructed free flow of vehicular movement, Hon. Akintunde said a lot of advocacy was on-going, stating that meetings had been held with stakeholders such as, “Iyalojas” and “Babalojas”, to enlighten traders and caution them not to risk their lives because they want to make a living.

He observed that some had built shanties or dumped refuse on drainages, thereby blocking free-flow of sewage and preventing free flow of vehicles or pedestrians from walking, saying the narrow road at Ifo was a host to articulated vehicles.

The SSA, who hinted that advocacy, monitoring and inspection to markets and garages would be a continuous exercise, adding that the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, recently had a meeting with enforcement officers in the Ministry, on the need to braze up in their activities and put measures in place to ensure compliance, warning that violators would be penalised, in accordance to the law, while their goods or wares would be confiscated.
