Ogun State House of Assembly has expressed concern over inadequate funding of its legislative activities, calling for speedy release of capital vote to execute various projects for the 2024 fiscal year
Edu-Biznews recalled that Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration had last 30th of November, 2023, allocated just two percent of the over N703billion budget size, which is N14.2 billion to the legislature while just one percent of the budget proposal goes to the judiciary arm of government in the coming 2024 fiscal year
The Clerk of the house, Mr Adedeji Adeyemo expressed the concern over the inadequate funding of capital projects in the previous years and the outgoing fiscal year of 2023 , as a result of non-release of approved vote to execute various capital projects in the State House of Assembly
Adeyemo during the defence of the State House of Assembly 2024 budgetary provision before its Finance and Appropriation Committee, complained of inadequate office accomodations for top personnel of the State Assembly, appealing for release of fund by the executive arm of government as approved by the legislators
He emphasized the need for expansion of facilities at the State House of Assembly complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta to accommodate more offices for staff of the house, particularly top personnel
The Clerk as head of personnel at the legislature, called for financial autonomy for the house,to enable address the challenges of inadequate office accomodations and staff
"We will continue to face these challenges until the house enjoys its full financial autonomy as amended in the Nigeria's 1999 constitution", he stated
The House Minority Leader , Hon. Lukman Adeleye (Odogbolu Constituency) had earlier expressed concern over shortage of staff and the need to recruit more personnel to compliment the existing workforce who are now being overstretched at the legislative arm of government
He equally emphasized the need to expose the personnel to both local and international training programmes on how to properly manage activities of the legislators in the house
Similarly the Majority Leader, Hon.Yusuf Sheriff (Ado-Odo/Ota I Constituency) equally stressed the need for secretariat staff for offices of lawmakers, to enable them function effective and carry out their oversight assessments as legislators
Meanwhile the Finance and Appropriation Committee of the State House of Assembly led by Hon.Lamidi Musefiu (Ado-Odo/Ota II Constituency) has expressed appreciation to Governor Dapo Abiodun for making it possible for the house to have meaning engagement with political heads and top officials of Ministries, Departments and Agencies during the recently concluded 2024budget defence exercise
Musefiu addressing newsmen over the weekend shortly after the conclusion of the budget defence in the house by the MDAs, assured State Government of the speedy passage of the 2024 Appropriation Bill of N703 billion before the week runs out to sustain the January to December budget circle in the state
