Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri proved too hot for his Egyptian opponent Ahmed Saleh whom he thrashed with four straight sets to retain his ITTF Africa Senior Championship title on Sunday in Tunisia
Quadri, the Africa's number one Table Tennis player easily dismissed Saleh in the final of the 2023 edition of the tournament held in Rades, Tunisia, winning the first set (11-2, 12-10, 12-6, 12-6) to retain the title he won in Algeria last year.
It will be recalled that that the 18th ranked player in the world had staged a remarkable comeback to beat arch-rival Omar Assar of Egypt in last year's edition to clinch his second ITTF Africa's Singles title
Quadri's arch rival on the continent , Assar had crashed out in the quarterfinal after sustaining an injury.
To reach the final, Quadri thrashed fellow Nigerian compatriot Olajide Omotayo 4-0 in the first semi-final game, while Saleh edged Saheed Idowu of DR Congo 4-2 in the second semifinal match.
Similarly, Hana Goda defeated fellow Egyptian Dina Meshref of Egypt 4-1 to win the women’s singles title of the 2023 ITTF Africa Senior Championship.
Earlier, seven-time Olympian, Funke Oshonaike, partnered with Fatimo Bello to claim the gold medal for Nigeria in the women’s doubles event at the 2023 ITTF Africa Championship on Saturday.
The duo became the first Nigerians to win a gold medal at the tournament in Tunis, Tunisia.
