Pensioners on the payroll of Ogun State Government are groaning over the continous delay in the payment of some outstanding gratuities for the first quarter of this fiscal year
Governor Dapo Abiodun had during his meeting with the pensioners in Abeokuta held before his re-election at the March 18,2023 governorship poll, announced the upward review of the quarterly payment of the outstanding gratuities from the initial N600million to N1billion, which he promised would be paid at the end of first quarter of the year that is end of March
But a top official at the State Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Leme area of Abeokuta, told Edu-biznews that the union was yet to receive either the N1 billion or the initial N600million for the outstanding gratuities as at May 9, 2023(Tuesday), contrary to the promise made by the governor that N1billion would be released at the end of first quarter which is March 31
The official decried the situation, saying that the union is still in the dark on when government would eventually release the money for payment of gratuities to beneficiaries, whom he claimed are dieing because of lack of money to take care of themselves, particularly their medical bills at hospitals and other financial obligations
He urged the governor to urgently ensure the release of the N1billion as promised, to enable the pensioners reap the fruits of their labour after serving the state for 35 years
Both the leadership of Trade Union Congress and Nigeria Labour Congress in the state had called on the government to mandate its two committees on the consequential adjustment of monthly pension and that of the contributory pension scheme to submit their respective reports for Implementation in the interest of pensioners who are suffering for not getting their entitlements
