Governor Dapo Abiodun has charged industries operating in Ogun State
to embrace eco-friendly practices, so as to aid the reduction of carbon emissions in the State.
The governor gave the charge while inaugurating a set of 40 eco-friendly trucks owned by International Breweries Plc at the company's Gateway Brewery on Abeokuta-Sagamu in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area of the State
Abiodun represented by State Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Mrs. Kikelomo Longe, said more companies operating in the State, need to work towards the reduction of carbon emissions for sustainable development of the State.
He commended the organisation’s efforts on the reduction of carbon emissions, adding that the conversion from diesel to Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered trucks would lead to the total elimination of sulphur-dioxide and the total elimination of soot in the environment.
"I encourage other companies in the same industry, and even other industries, to follow this lead in embedding eco-friendly practices into their operations and positively impacting their stakeholders and society at large. I look forward to ecological trucks being deployed more widely because it is then that we can reap substantial benefits", Abiodun said.
Speaking on his administration's strides at enhancing the transport and industrial sectors, the Governor noted that the State had established the Ministry of Transportation, and constructed several kilometres of road, while the first test flight was recently launched at the Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport, which would result in the Airport's full certification and licensing.
In his address, the Procurement Director, International Breweries Plc, Mr. Akintunde Fayanmira said the need to reduce global emissions in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 and 13 motivated the company to invest in the acquisition of gas-powered trucks in partnership with Ecologique which would see a conversion from diesel to liquified natural gas (LNG) resulting to 30 percent reductions in Carbon-dioxide emission and 80 percent reduction in nitrogen- oxide.
Fayanmira revealed the organisation’s plan to acquire 540 gas-powered trucks over the next three years, assuring of its commitment to the use of cleaner energy.
