NUT lauds Ogun Assembly For Reviewing Education Sector’s Allocation In 2022 Budget

 Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has lauded the move by the Ogun State House of Assembly to review upward the allocation of the education sector in the 2022 Appropriation Bill  being considered by the  legislators

Secretary of the State wing of NUT ,Comrade Samson Oyelere  in an interview with Edu-biznews in Abeokuta,the state capital, described the decision by the lawmakers to review the budgetary allocation of the sector as welcome development, stressing the need for proper funding of education, particularly in areas of recruitment of more teachers in both public primary and secondary schools and provision of adequate infrastructure

Governor Dapo Abiodun had on the 30th of November,2021, proposed N56billion for  the education’s sector ,representing 16 percent  of the  N350.74billion budget size presented  before the house for consideration and approval

But  the house during its debate on the budget proposal last Thursday, 2nd of December,2021 expressed concern over the allocation, describing it as grossly inadequate for the education’s sector considering the acute  shortage of teachers in the public schools and  urgent need  to employ more teachers as well as provide the needed infrastructure and furniture in the schools

The Scribe of NUT in the state who described the allocation as far below the 26 percent recommended by UNESCO , lauded the move by  lawmakers , saying “what the State House of Assembly has done is a welcome development, the Nigeria Union of Teachers(NUT) is appreciating the honourables for the kind gesture”

The union however stressed the need for the lawmakers to ensure actual disbursement of the fund after approving the upward review of the allocation to the sector

“We will also appeal that the budgetary provision is not enough ,the honourables should also extend that approval to their oversight functions to see to the disbursement of the fund, not only allocating the fund but disbursement of the fund, so that we can have enough fund in the education sector in 2022”, Oyelere stated

“Education sector in Ogun State needs a lot of money, to take care of teachers’ needs in service and recruite more teachers  in public primary and secondary schools’”, he added

NUT is also seeking legislation for the education intervention fund of N200million initiated by the Abiodun’s administration ,to attract well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to the trust fund

“The State Government  Education Trust Fund ,education intervention fund should be backed by  law, so that  well-meaning Nigerians can contribute their quota to the development of education in the state and its implementation should commence without any further delay “,Oyelere charged
