Babcock University’s V.C Seeks Review Of TETFUND To Support Private Varsities




Vice-Chancellor of the Babcock University, Ilisan-Remo, Ogun  State, Prof.Ademola Tayo has sought for a review of the existing provisions of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund TETFUND, to expand the scope beyond supporting  public universities and extend the fund to private universities  in the country

The vice-chancellor of Nigeria’s premier private university who made the call during  a media interactive session with Education Writers Association of Nigeria (EWAN) on Sunday  on the institution’s main campus in Ilisan-Remo, stressed that  such review should be done by the National Assembly, to     support human capital development and researches in private universities  through grants

“It is only when TETFUND law is amended to accommodate private universities and personally TETFUND should support grants for researches and human capital  development in private universities in the country”, he stressed

Prof.Ademola insisted that  Babcock University would not compromise its high  standard ,despite financial challenges posed by the present  inflation in the country’s economy , arising from skyrocketing prices of goods ,foodstuff  and other essential services

“We have  highly respected emeritus professors  and other professors and  we have to pay them good salary to retain them in the university to sustain the high standard  for the students to continue to get quality education, our products are testimonies of quality education as reflected in various laurels won by the undergraduates”, the vice-chancellor maintained

 He explained that the university’s Students Support Centre was established to provide the needed support to  any of the institution’s students who suddenly  found him or herself  in a financial difficulty due to  loss of parents or any other unforeseen problems

The vice-chancellor hinted that Babcock University was at the advanced stage of digitalizing  all its academic programmes ,haven invested heavily in providing the needed infrastructure for the application of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) in its operations

On the provision of physical infrastructure to cope increasing students population, he revealed that two hostels one each for  boys and girls were being constructed while new Accident and Emergency building for  the university teaching hospital’s MRI, opposite  the university’s main gate as well as construction of  48 retailed shops opposite the university’s main gate, to boost commercial activities among members of the host community
