A Delta State born Uefa-A Licensed Coach, Brunks Warwick has asked Nigerians to stop distracting Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, ahead of the Super Eagles forthcoming Africa's play-off for the qualification ticket to the 2022 World cup in Qatar
The Franco- German tactician has been under strong criticism from some Nigerians who are calling for his removal over what they described as below average performance of the Super Eagles in the World cup qualifiers, particularly the recent home match against Blue Sharks of Cape Verde Island which ended in one-all at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos
But Warwick in an exclusive chat with Edu-Biznews recently in Abeokuta, warned that such distraction was capable of affecting Nigeria's chances in securing the qualification ticket for a place in the world cup, after surviving the group stage of the qualifier
The former Assistant Coach of Guinea Bissau cadet team and one-time tactician of the Liverpool John-Moore University in Dublin, Ireland insisted that Rohr should be allowed to concentrate on the major task of ensuring that Nigeria books its place in the 2022 World cup in Qatar which is part of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation NFF
"Rohr should be allowed to select his players for every match, without external influence from the football federation or any other quarters, some calling for his sack want him to fail so that they can replace with their preferred coach or manager", he stated
The member of the United Kingdom University team technical crew to the 2006 World Universities Games in Japan added that the football governing body in the country should be blamed for quality of football not Rohr
Warwick who once plied his trade as footballer in Europe for FC Porto of Portugal, Saint Etienne of France as well as African sides ASC Bouake of Ivory Coast and USM of Gabon stressed the need for NFF to put in place a proper structure to develop football at the grassroots in the country
There is unconfirmed that NFF is targeting a manager from Serbia to replace the 68 year-old Franco-German tactician ahead of the Eagles play-off for the world cup
However, President of the NFF, Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick, said that no such decision has been taken admidst wide speculation among local and International media over the move to sack Rohr
“The Board of the NFF is studying the report of the Technical Committee, which it submitted after the match against Cape Verde in Lagos on Tuesday. There are a number of possibilities but we have not taken a decision to sack Gernot Rohr. I want to assure that whatever decision is eventually taken will be one that will please the generality of Nigerians"he assured.
“Mr Rohr has a contract with the NFF and there is a procedure for disengagement. If we get to that bridge, both parties will look at the contract and see what has to be done both ways. The Super Eagles’ squad is a national asset and we are just fortunate to be in that space to take decisions. Any decision we take must be what will be acceptable to Nigerians from far and near.”, Pinnick stated
Rohr, a former Germany international defender, has led the Super Eagles in 54 international matches over the course of five years and three months, winning 28 of those matches.
