Nigerian Movie Producers, Directors, Marketers and Artists are worried over the rate of piracy of their creative works, asking the National Assembly to amend the existing law, to include stiffer punishment for those caught in the unholy act
President of Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria,TAMPAN, Otunba Bolaji Amusan popularly known as 'Mr.Latin" raised the concern on Tuesday in Abeokuta while speaking on the sideline of a news conference, ahead of the association's 2021 Conference of Nigerian Arts and Films slated to hold between December 15 and 18, 2021 in the Ogun State capital
Amusan described the existing act on piracy as very weak which needed to be reviewed for more stiffer punishment to discourage those who engage in the illegal activities
He unfolded the plan by who is who in the entertainment industry in the country,to march to the National Assembly complex in Abuja and call for a review of the law
"We want to gather ourselves together, the who is who in the entertainment industry in Nigeria, artists, film makers/producers and directors ,we will move to the National Assembly and tell them to create a conducive business atmosphere, how can we thrive, if pirates are ravaging the Industry", Amusan lamented
According to him, "piracy is like a cankerworm which has eaten deep into the fabric of the creative Industry, if you don't kill it , it will kill you"
"We want a more stiffer penalties for any one caught in the act of piracy, if such bill can be enacted, it will be a thing of joy for us", the TAMPAN boss stated
On the forthcoming conference, he revealed that over 5,000,(five thousand) practitioners who are members of the association within and outside the country would be attending the three-day activities
Amusan explained that the 16th of December would be opening ceremony of the conference at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library OOPL by 2:00pm while the remaining activities between 17th and 18th would take place at the Park Inn and Radisson Hotel both in the city
Also speaking Chairman of the Planning Committee, Alhaji Tajudeen Olanrewaju said that the conference aimed at creating exposure for budding talents as well as promoting creativity
According to him, "the 2021conference is an improvement on the annual conference of the association, which has been celebrated up to 5th edition, it is usually a programme of multiple events, which is always a 4-day of multifaceted activities.
The Deputy President of TAMPAN listed the events at the conference to include, Cultural Parade, Drama Competition, Film Exhibitions, Investiture , Gala Night, Awards, Induction of Diamond members and Annual General Meeting AGM
He added that the conference inline with its theme "Film as a Tangible Assets", would focus on movie producers would get return on their Investment in film production
" A business that doesn't return its Investment is a waste of capital and other intangible efforts . This is why the Conference of Arts and Films in 2021 focuses on how our people can make profit from their film making ventures ", the committee explained
He stated that an online registration platform had been created for interested participants to register on www.tampan.org, to enable the committee to plan adequately for them in compliance with COVID-19 protocol
Also Consultant to the association, an advertising guru, Omoba Segun Adewale expressed confidence in the local movie Industry, describing TAMPAN as a major pillar of the Nigeria's film industry
He called on Corporate organizations to invest in the industry for a greater return on investment.
