Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) has asked Ogun State Government to ensure students stay at home, immediately after the completion of their first term examination on Monday, next week, as part of safety measures to curtail rising tension and apprehension among teachers in public secondary schools in the state
The State Chairman of the union, Comrade Akeem Lasisi and Secretary, Comrade Joseph Banjo in a letter addressed to the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof.Abayomi Arigbabu, obtained by EduBiznews on Thursday,urged government to take the urgent step, to prevent the tensed situation from degenerating further
ASUSS described as worrisome, the recent stoning of the DPO attached to Obantoko Station of the Nigeria Police Force during clash between students of Asero High School and Egba Comprehensive High School both in Abeokuta, the state capital
"This strange development got to its height with the recent report of stoning of the DPO of Obantoko office of the Nigeria Police Force and the news of the death of a fellow teacher which filtered in from our neighbouring state of Lagos",the union stated in the letter.
The union added it has been under serious pressure from members who
bombarded it with various reports of violence and attack being recorded across schools in the state
"In view of this, may we humbly request that *students in our schools across the state should stay at home immediately after the ongoing first term examination which officially ends on Monday 30th November, 2021", ASUSS pleaded
According to the union,"This is a PROACTIVE cum preventive method that will curtail the tension and apprehension presently ongoing among our teachers in the state".
