Ogun State Government has put arrangement in place to train youths, including secondary school students on different agricultural vocational skills, through the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP).
The training is aimed at enhancing massive food production in the state
Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, Dr. Adeola Odedina, unfolded this in Abeokuta, while playing host to Members of Catfish Association of Nigeria (CAFAN)
He explained that the initiative would be an added advantage to the earlier intervention programmes in the State.
Odedina, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Dotun Sorunke, said the Ministry has strong relationship with different fishery associations in the State, and had linked them to various opportunities such as training, funds, among others.
“National record has shown that Ogun State has the highest fish hub in West Africa, in capacity and size. We are ready to support more farmers in different commodities. Any association that wants opportunity in agriculture should come and register. Don't practice in isolation, be visible for us to know you. Come to us for capturing and we will engage you”, he said.
Earlier in his presentation, Chairman CAFAN, Mr. Samuel Olubodun said lots of value-chain opportunities abound in catfish farming, which the young ones should learn early in life as a means of livelihood, noting that Agriculture and vocational skills should be made lucrative and inculcated in children, irrespective of the profession they choose later in life.
Olubodun solicited for more synergy with government and other fishery associations, saying Ogun is at the fore-front of fish business in Nigeria, having different fish farm clusters across the three Senatorial Districts.
