Ogun Sets To Recruite 5,000 Teachers, Beef-up Security In Schools




Ogun State Government says arrangements are being concluded  for the final phase of recruitment of 5,000 teachers under its Ogun TEACh Scheme, to fill the existing vacancies in both primary and secondary schools in the state

Also the government is fine-tuning process of deploying two security personnel to each of the schools to beef up security in and round them, following the rising cases of Insecurity, particularly the abduction of school children by armed bandits across the country

The State Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Professor Abayomi Arigbabu revealed these on behalf of Governor Dapo Abiodun  while declaring open the 7th quadrennial delegates conference of the  State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Abeokuta on Tuesday



Arigbabu explained that the interview for the shortlisted candidates would be done in the next three or four weeks, to complete their recruitment process into the teaching service

Edu-Biznews recalled that the State Government began the recruitment excercise for teachers under the voluntary teaching scheme last May 11,2021 during which over 18,000 applicants took part in the Computer Based Test conducted in the four divisions of the state

According to him, "Arrangement is in top gear to employ five thousand, 5,000 graduate teachers through the N-teach skill acquisition programme to compliment the teaching force in our public primary and secondary schools in the state"

On the insecurity situation in the state, Arigbabu added that Governor Abiodun had approved deployment of two security Operatives to provide security in each of the schools while holding talks with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NSCDC, to strengthen the security arrangement on ground and ensure the safety of the children and their teachers in schools

The Commissioner assured the teachers that the Dapo Abiodun's administration would continue to give priority to their  welfare, promising that all the outstanding unpaid leave allowances, global deductions would be paid before the end of the administration

He stated that government was working on creative ways of funding education, through the Education Trust Fund initiative

Speaking on the theme of the Conference "The Place of Education in the Face of Security Challenges In the Nation", he blamed the insecurity in the country on the imbalances in the Society saying"the only panacea to these imbalances is education while the ability to navigate these challenges without compromising standard lies in the hands of our teachers. Teachers are truly great leaders"

The immediate past chairman of the State NUT, Comrade Titilope Adebanjo had in his welcome speech, expressed concern over shortage of teachers in classrooms and security challenges in and round schools in the state

Adebanjo who is also the State Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) lamented over none payment of six years leave allowances, Teachers Peculiar Allowance in full(27.5percent) as well as none released of global deductions and payment of compensation for the union's fully registered demolished structure

He listed other challenges facing NUT in the state, to include the need to provide replacement for its 18 seater rickety bus and none Institutionalization of the appointment of Principal General/Headteacher General through an Executive bill to the State House of Assembly for it to be gazzeted, urging the incoming executives of the union to focus on actualization of the challenges and give priority to well-being of all classroom teachers 

He however commended the Abiodun's administration for the reconstruction of dilapidated school buildings spread across the 236 wards in the state with its yellow roof revolution and restoration of positions of Principal General/ Headteacher General  in the four divisions of the state and implementation of the career elevation for university graduate teachers in primary schools beyond level 14 to level 16 and 17 amongst others achievements in the last four years of the out-gone executives of NUT in the state

Guest speaker, Mrs Ronke Soyombo who is also the Special Adviser on Primary and Secondary Education, while delivering her lecture stressed the need to always strike a balance between those who are gifted interns of knowledge and those who are talented in various vocations 

She emphasised the need to give equal attention to the technical/vocational education, particularly the technical colleges as part of measures to create jobs for skilled labour in order to address the disturbing trend of insecurity in Nigeria

The 2021 Delegates Conference attracted top officials of NUT across the country, including the National Vice President, Comrade Kayode Akosile who represented the National President of the union, Comrade (Dr.)Nasir Idris, State NLC Chairman, Comrade Emmanuel Bankole, Chairman of the  State Teaching Service Commission, Evangelist Joshua Ifede and top officials of SUBEB and Ministry of Education Science and Technology
