Remo Stars Football Club of Ikenne-Remo continued its winning streak on Sunday, after defeating rivals Gateway United by two/nil in a local derby in a matchweek five fixtures of the ongoing second tier Nigeria National League, NNL season.
Seun Ogunribide and Ogwuechi Mathias goals in each half of the thrilling encounter played at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, ensured that the Sky Blue maintained their leadership position in the Group B2 Southern Conference of the league
Seun Ogunribide opened scoring against his former team mates within the five minutes of the derby before Mathias in an unmarked position, inside Gateway's 18 yards box doubed the lead in the second half.
The defeat ended Gateway United's three matches unbeaten streak in the league, as the host consolidated on their top spot with 12 points, leaving the visitors at seven points
Coach Hakeem Busari tutored side increased the tempo of the game as they went out in search of an equalizer which never came
The visitors faulted some of the calls of the centre referee with yellows cards being handed out at the slightest of challenges by them against the home side .
Goal keeper, Ibikun Araromi gave good account of himself for the visitors, making brilliant save from a point blank effort off Ibrahim Yusuf in the first half of the match and in the 78th minute, denying Tsavva Emmanuel ,after tipping the ball away for a corner kick.
Coach Busari made two quick substitutions as Aderemi Yusuf and Ogunyele Sulaimon came on for Haruna Salifu, Araromi Nurudeen, which failed to produce the needed goals
Gateway missed golden opportunity to get a consolation goal when Sanni Jamiu 20yards shot went off the goal post
Coach Hakeem Busari reactiing to the outcome of the encounter, bemoaned the poor officiating from the centre referee while assuring all and sundry that his side will bounce back to winning ways.
"The referee was very tensed. Most of his calls were unduely favourable to the hosts, but he's human, he's bound to make errors, this one, one too many though. The favourable calls for Remo was very glaring. A derby should be a 50/50 affair, but that was 80/20. Well, that's gone. We look forward to our next game"
Gateway United according to its Media Officer, Moses Ojewumi, will square up against Ibom Youth FC on Wednesday 20th March, 2021.
