Gov.Fayemi Wants Removal Of UBEC Counterpart Fund



Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State has called for the removal of payment of counterpart fund as basic precondition, for the State Government to access Federal Government funding of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) 

Fayemi who is the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), rather  urged UBEC and Federal Ministry of Education to improve mechanism for school monitoring and evaluation of projects, to ensure strict compliance to the provision of qualitative education in the country.

The Governor who made the call while receiving House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education Chairman, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere who led other members on a visit to him at the Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti.

According to him,“It is necessary to step down counterpart funding for states to access the money that is just sitting there and the president has agreed with us. That would enable states take more accelerated actions on schools".

“I know how important this committee is. I want to plead with you to really continue to impress it on the Universal Basic Education Commission and the Federal Ministry of Education to pay more attention to the quality of education and to the monitoring and evaluation exercise.,”Fayemi added 

Prof. Julius Ihonvbere whose committee had earlier visited Ogun State and met with Governor Dapo Abiodun, explained that the committee was in the State, as part of its constitutional responsibility to assess the extent states utilised the Federal Government grants provided to them through UBEC.

He commended the Fayemi-led administration for injecting passion and commitment to reposition and refocus basic education in the state.
