Anxiety Grips Ogun Workers Over Unpaid 14Months Deductions

Anxiety has gripped workers on the payroll of Ogun State Government over the unpaid 14 months deductions from their salaries, running into billions of naira

Edu-Biznews findings among workers at the State Government's Secretariat in Oke-mosan Abeokuta, revealed that there is no sign on the part of the government,to begin the process of clearing the deductions owed by the Dapo Abiodun's administration and remit them to the appropriate quarters

Also no concrete move by government  to redeem the agreement of releasing N500million quarterly for payment of the outstanding gratuities to retirees from the service, with just two weeks to the end of first quarter.

Both the organized labour and Governmen agreed in the Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) signed last September 18,2020, that N500million  would be released quarterly for payment of outstanding gratuities, starting with January,2021 in the first quarter of the year

They also agreed that gross salary should be paid to workers immediately, to reduce the accumulated unpaid global deductions from salaries of workers

The MOU also included clearance of promotion areas since 2018 till date

But Edu-Biznews gathered that the State Government had failed to implement the agreements, as workers are still being paid net salary, leading to continue increase in the unremitted deductions, which is now 14months while that of N500million quarterly release for gratuities to retirees, is yet to be done, less than two weeks to end the first quarter of the year

However, circulars had been issued by the State Government, directing heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies to forward list of affected workers due for promotion between 2018 and 2020, in a move to clear the promotion arrears

The workers have questioned the rationale for the State Government's claim of sourcing N500million to support the monthly payment of salaries to civil servants in the 20 Local Government Areas in the state while there is still uncertainty in the payment of the unremitted deductions from their salaries

Most of the workers are worried over the unremitted deductions because they depend largely on the unpaid deductions, from their salaries,to meet their financial obligations to banks and individuals

The non-payment of the deductions  is now making life unbearable for them, following the unremitted deductions and continous payment of net salary to them

Edu-Biznews gathered from reliable source that the State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council will meet at the end of this month, to take holistic review of the agreement with the State Government, before deciding on the next line of Industrial action
