Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA),says it has begun the implementation of collection of waste bill from residents, for effective waste management in Abeokuta, the state capital and other major towns including Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Mowe and Ibafo
The implementation of the waste collection bill according to the State Government, is part of its waste management reforms for a clean, safe and healthy environment
Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Mr. Ola Oresanya stated this during a recent meeting with waste Private Service Providers (PSP), and Vendors.
He explains that the selected areas are under the first phase of the waste agency's implementation of the waste reform programme in the state.
Mr. Oresanya added that the success of the first phase, would aid the next phase, which would be Statewide and enjoined residential houses and commercial outlets that were not captured in the first phase to cooperate with PSP assigned to their areas for better service delivery.
"Under this new arrangement, you are to service all households in your jurisdiction regularly, and serve them with bills which have the seal of the State government, but at no point must those households complain of any selective or inefficient service from you, as anyone found guilty will be sanctioned", the Special Adviser warned.
He said only waste collection articulated vehicles known as Compactors are allowed to collect wastes, urging owners of outlawed vehicles to join hands and get Compactors, so as to be part of the new waste management reforms, just as waste vendors were to wait for new guidelines that would regulate their operations.
Responding, the Chairman of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAN), Ogun State Chapter, Mr. Jolaoso Emmanuel appreciated the State government for the new initiative, promising his members’ support to make the reform successful.
