Ogun State Government has expressed concern over activities of some of the Timber Contractors
, warning that continuous flitch production as well as illegal logging and farming in the state's forest reserves may lead to complete depletion
The State Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Tunji Akinosi who raised the fear, stressed the need to always replant five trees in replacement for everyone fell or removed in the State's forest reserves
Akinosi at a recent meeting in Abeokuta, the state capital with timber contractors from Area J1, J3 and J4, described tree replanting as one of the essentials in addressing environmental climate change
The Commissioner added that timber contractors, as major stakeholders should complement the government's effort in forest regeneration and sustainability across the State.
His words,"Aggressive replanting of trees is key as replacement for the major resources taken out of forest reserves, or else history will not be kind to us as people when generations after us talk about our actions during our time".
Akinosi enjoined timber contractors to be concerned with replanting of trees, which are the main resources taken from the reserves .
Responding, the Head of the team Ijebu Igbo Timber Contractors Board of Trustees, Alhaja Bimpe Kazeem, says they (contractors) are also facing challenges with illegal fellers who attacked their monitoring team last year.
She assured that the Board would not fold it hands and allow illegalities to be the order of the day in the reserves.
