All schools in Abia State have been directed to reopen on January 11 for the continuation of the 2020/2021 academic session.
Also Tertiary Institutions in Kwara State, are to reopen the same day for normal academic activities with strict compliance to all COVID-19 pandemic protocols.
Abia State Education Commissioner, Kanaelechi Nwangwa who said Governor Okezie Ikpeazu approved the re-opening, directed all school heads and proprietors,to ensure that they observe COVID-19 protocols for the safety of teachers and students.
He stressed the need to adhere strictly to the guidelines, following the second wave of the COVID-19 in Nigeria.
His words“They should also note that by this directive, the first term of 2020/2021 will now officially end on Wednesday Feb. 10, 2021”.
According to the Commissioner,“This is to ensure that the first term runs a full course as expected.
The State Government vowed to sanction any of the school Proprietors who fails to comply with the protocol.
“Any school proprietor that shortchanges this schedule and decides to cut corners by running an abridged term will be appropriately sanctioned".
Nwangwa added that “The duration of the first term for the 2020/2021 academic session is from Nov. 2, 2020 to Feb. 10, 2021 with the Christmas break in-between,”.
In Kwara State , Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRasaq directed all Tertiary Institutions to put in place, appropriate safety protocols, to curtail the spread of the virus.
The Chief Press Secretary to the State Government and Spokesman for Technical Committee on COVID-19, Mr Rafiu Ajakaye, made the announcement in a statement issued on Friday in Ilorin.
“Government has directed that the tertiary institutions should put in place appropriate safety protocols to prevent the spread of the virus on their campuses".
According to the statement “The coordinating ministry is to work with the state technical committee on COVID-19 and other stakeholders to ensure that schools do not take safety rules for granted.
The State Government stressed the need for wearing of face masks before being allowed into the campuses.
“Specifically, the use of face mask is mandatory on the campus and in lecture rooms. Authorities are not to allow anyone, students or otherwise, into college facilities without the use of the face mask.
“Similarly, elementary schools in the state are scheduled to resume on January 18, subject to new developments on the pandemic,” it said.
The State Government in the statement,said everyone in the state should learn how to live with the COVID-19 to flatten the curve, saying the decease has come to stay.
