COVID-19: NUC Asks Varsities To Reopen Jan.18

National Universities Commission (NUC) has asked Vice-Chancellors to re-open both public and private universities on January 18, for normal academic activities , following the directive by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19.

Edu-Biznews recalled that the public universities had been shutdown to academic activities since last March, by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) who suspended their Industrial action on December 23rd, after reaching agreements with the Federal Government for proper funding of the University system in  Nigeria.

NUC in a statement on Friday by its Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed through the Deputy Executive Secretary (Administration), Chris Maiyaki, instructed them to reopen the universities, saying any further developments would be communicated to the Universities accordingly.

The commission, also directed officers on Grade Level 12 and below to remain at home for a period of five weeks as earlier directed by the Federal Government.

NUC in  the new directive with Ref.  No. NUC/ES/138/Vol.63/151 and dated December 23, 2020, explained that the decision is to safeguard lives by strictly adhering to the extant safety protocols and guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, which have been communicated severally to them through NUC circulars.
