Ogun State Government says work is still in progress on the proposed State-owned airport project, to further ease the movement of goods and services and boost commercial activities in the state.
The State Commissioners for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo, who dropped the hint recently while defending the budget of his Ministry before the Appropriation Committee of the State House of Assembly in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the contractor handling the project, had done some preliminary work with the report ready, part of which informed the choice of location of the project.
Dairo described the proximity of the airport project to the existing Muritala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, as well as availability of the existing transportation infrastructure, as immense benefit to the state..
He said that the location had increased demand for land for developmental purpose.
The Commissioner further stated that the Ministry has earmarked a sum of N880,507,530.41, as total expenditure for year 2021, and currently working on the legal frame-work that would help in its smooth running of the transportation sector.
He revealed that the ministry would spend N706,957,698.35 for its various capital projects including Rail project, extension of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) ,to some border towns with Lagos State, maintenance of existing and erection of new Traffic light, among others to enhance safety of all road users.
Dairo added that the Ministry would collaborate with its counterpart in Lagos State on the proposed BRT project , to explore opportunities, as government is mindful of activities at the border town and the need to make proper planning, to ensure opportunities for the overall benefit of the State.
The Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Hon. Olakunle Sobunkanla charged the Ministry to find a way to reduce carnage on the road and ensure safety of lives and property of road users.
He assured the ministry of the State House of Assembly's readiness to support it, towards improving the State transportation system
