COVID-19: NUC Orders Varsities To Suspend Activities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has ordered immediate suspension of academic activities in all  universities in Nigeria, in a move to curtail the spread of Coronavirus pandemic, arising from the resurgence of the disease in the country

The directive has dashed the hope of several  students in public universities returning to their campuses in January, 2021 for normal academic activities, after suspension of the nine months old strike last Wednesday by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Deputy Executive Secretary of NUC (Administration), Chris Maiyaki in a circular, particularly directed Vice-Chancellors of universities not to allow any form of academic activities involving large crowds to be organized or hosted on their campuses.

The Commission also ordered the indefinite suspension of  classrooms, hostel accommodation, conferences and seminars, until further directive by the Federal Government on the reopening of schools.

The circular reads in parts
”Vice-Chancellors are to please note that the directive is part of the measures approved by Mr. President to mitigate the second wave of Coronavirus infections in the country.
“The affected officers are expected to perform their duties from home while those on GL 13 and above should strictly adhere to the extant preventive measures, including maintenance of physical distancing, regular washing of hands and/or sanitizing of hands, wearing of face masks and reducing the number of visitors to offices"the circular concluded.
