Private schools operating in Ogun State say they are mobilizing teachers on their payroll to register with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), ahead of the January, 2021 deadline by the Federal Government for all qualified teachers to be licensed by the regulatory council.
Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education, Arc.Sonny Echonu had last Saturday during the TRCN conduct of Professional Qualifying Examination for qualified teachers, insisted that qualified teachers must be licensed by the Council to teach in classrooms as from next year.
President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in Ogun State, Dr. Lawrence Holumidey revealed to Edu-Biznews on Wednesday in Abeokuta, the state capital that the association was mobilizing teachers in private schools to register with TRCN, to ensure accurate data of teachers in the country.
"We are yet to take position on the qualifying examination as an association but we are mobilizing our teachers to get registered with TRCN, it is a good development to have accurate data of qualifed teachers for proper planning"he stated
But he quickly cautioned Federal Government against allowing TRCN to continue to conduct qualifying examination for already qualified teachers, saying it is needless for TRCN to conduct such examination for a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Degree holder from University or holder of Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) from College of Education.
He warned that such decision would only worsen the existing wide gab in the teacher to pupils ratio currently put at a teacher to 200 pupils in public schools.
Holumidey called for a review of the decision not create further crisis in the system, asking the TRCN to be more concerned about how to enhance the skills of qualifed teachers by packaging foreign trip for training to expose them, organize worshop and seminars inline with the current trend in teaching profession, to encourage more qualified teachers to register with the regulatory council.
He also faulted the Federal Government's decision to employ only qualified teachers with First Class or Second Class upper division grade in Nigerian Schools as from 2021 .
The State NAPPS boss stressed the need for proper supervision of teachers to enhance quality of teaching and learning in Nigerian Schools, not just employing the best brains as teachers.
His words"There are more qualified teachers in public schools with less supervision but less qualified teachers in private schools with more supervision which makes them to be more productive in private schools"
