President Buhari Reinstates Embattled UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Dissolves Governing Council

The embattled Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos, Prof.Oluwatoyin Ogundipe suspended last August 12 by the institution's governing council, has been reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The president also dissolved the Governing Council of the university, formerly chaired by Dr.Wale Babalakin, following recommendations by a Visitation Panel set up by the presidency to investigate the crisis in the institution

Edu-Biznews recalled that both  Chairman of the dissolved governing council and the reinstated Vice-Chancellor had been having a running battle over execution of some capital projects on the university's campus.

Spokesman of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong announced the reinstatement on Wednesday in a statement in Abuja

The Vice Chancellor according to the president in the statement, was not granted an opportunity to defend himself on the allegations upon which his removal was based saying "He should accordingly be re-instated."

"The Vice Chancellor was not granted an opportunity to defend himself on the allegations upon which his removal was based. He should accordingly be re-instated," the president stated .

President Buhari explained that the initial removal of  Ogundipe by the governing council did not follow due process.

Buhari expressed hope that the reinstatement would bring peace, stability, focus and direction to the University.

The federal government intervened in the crises by asking both Ogundipe and Babalakin to step aside until the conclusion of its investigation into the crisis.
