Ogun NUT Backs FG To Engage Only The Best Brains As Teachers In Nigeria

Ogun State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has thrown its full weight behind the decision of the Federal Government to engage only the best brains as Teachers In Nigerian schools as from January, 2021.

The State NUT is also supporting the decision to ensure that only qualified teachers licensed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) are allowed to teach in classrooms in the country, to promote professionalism in the teaching profession.

Edu-Biznews recalled that Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education, Arc.Sonny Echonu who monitored the conduct of the Professional Qualifying Examination by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) for teachers across the country last Saturday, explained that the decision is a renewed effort by the Federal Government  to ensure that only the best brains who are qualified teachers registered by TRCN are employed, to improve standard of teaching in the country.

The State Secretary of NUT, Comrade Samson Oyelere in an exclusive chat with Edu-Biznews on Monday in Abeokuta, asked the government not only to employ those qualified teachers with first class grade or second class upper division but to also review the education's admission policy of teriary Institutions in the country, aimed at  attracting the best brains at the point of entering higher Institutions of learning.

The admission process according to the union, should ensure that only the best of students seeking admission, are admitted into various Colleges of Education, Faculty of Education in the Universities or University of Education.

"Admitting the best brains into the College of Education and Faculty of Education at various universities, not those students who can't meet up with the high cut-marks of their respective desired courses", the union stated.

On ensuring that teachers are licensed by TRCN to teach in classrooms in Nigerian schools, the State NUT insisted that the registration with TRCN as a regulatory council for reaching profession is sacrosanct.

The union posited that"those not registered with TRCN should not be engaged as Teachers, it is sacrosanct, anybody teaching must be licensed by TRCN to teach in the classrooms"

The State wing of NUT, asked the Federal Ministry of Education to gazzette the decisions taken by taking them to National Council on Education for approval, to give it a national spread.

The union also enjoined government at all levels to give priority to welfare of Teachers in public schools, to encourage them and attract the best of brains to the teaching profession in the country.
