The 25 year-old World Trade Organization, WTO, is set to produce its first female Director General,as Nigeria's Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala made the final selection process stage of the Geneva-based trade body.
The Former Finance Minister according to Bloomberg report, will be contesting the final round for the plum position with another female candidate from South Korea,Yoo Myung-hee who is her country's Trade Minister.
Okonjo-Iweala who is enjoying strong backing of the Federal Government, had served two stints as Nigeria’s finance minister and one time, foreign affairs minister.
She had garnered enough working experience at international governance bodies, having served as a former managing director of the World Bank and as a chairman at the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization.
The other candidate,Yoo from South Korea’s is also a very strong contestant who had used her 25-year career in government, to expand her country’s trade network through bilateral accords with the U.S., China and the U.K.
WTO General Council Chairman David Walker is expected to formally announce the results to the institution’s delegates today(Thursday) in Geneva.
Other candidates including,United Kingdom’s Liam Fox, Kenya’s Amina Chawahir Mohamed Jibril and Saudi Arabia’s Mohammad Maziad Al-Tuwaijri did not secure enough support in the second round of consultations.
The third and final phase of the consultation process will begin later this month and run until November 6, after which the WTO will endeavour to name a consensus winner of the race.
EDU-BIZ NEWS recalled that another Nigerian, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, a former minister of agriculture, was earlier in the year, re-elected as president of Africa Development Bank.
