Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has joined his counterpart in Lagos,Ondo and Oyo States who shutdown Schools, following the tension generated by the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria.
Abiodun in a broadcast on the State Television on Tuesday night in Abeokuta, announced the closure of schools till Monday next week, October 26 and temporary placed ban on activities of commercial motorcycle operators, popularly known as Okada in the state.
Edu-Biznews observed that the Okada riders had been on rampage in the last two days, brandishing matchets and all sorts of dangerous weapons in protest over what they described as illegal hike in the daily ticket being issued by their various transport unions in the state.
The governor who had earlier met with top security chiefs in the state, said the State Government would not fold its arms and watched Hoodlums hijacking the peaceful EndSARS protest demonstration which had resulted to wanton destruction of lives and properties including the killing of an Operative of the Nigeria Customs Service on Tuesday in one of the border towns and burning of Police Stations.
"I must emphasise that we cannot fold our arms and let the state descend into anarchy. No right is absolute. In exercising our rights",he stressed.
Abiodun expressed with regret the hardship the people had been subjected to by the protesters, including illegal barricade of major highways and roads distrupting vehicular movements and even extortion by some Hoodlums who infiltrated the protest.
"The incidents in our state are not isolated cases, indeed the there are worse and gory reports of disturbing developments in other states across the country, including jail breaks and loss of lives and properties."the governor stated.
He added that security would be beefed-up around the Correctional Centres facilities and public places, while a Joint Patrol Team of Security Operatives would be on ground to ensure peace in the state, as people engage in their legitimate businesses without molestation.
The governor assured that the security situation would be reviewed on daily basis and more stringent measures would be taken if
necessary, warning parents and guardians not to allow their children to be used to destrupt public peace.
"We will be reviewing developments on a 24-hourly basis and will not hesitate to announce stringent measures as may be considered necessary".
"I appeal to all parents, guardians, traditional and religious leaders and indeed all stakeholders to rein their children and wards to avoid any act that may breach public peace or bring them into confrontation with the law enforcement agencies".
Abiodun asked those whose rights had been violated to report such complaint to the Human Right Report portal of the state government while asking youth groups' leaders to regularly engage government in addressing any form of abuses .
"I urge all to take full advantage of the windows available to express grievances in peaceful manners, including the Ogun State Human Rights Complaints Report portal and allow time for full implementation of the various government initiatives in response to their demands."the governor stated .
