One million, five hundred and forty-nine thousand, seven hundred and thirty-,one (1,549,731) candidates who sat for the 2020 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) are to wait till next week for their results, following the inability of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC),to release the results as expected today (Wednesday).
Edu-Biznews recalled that the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination conducted between August 17, 2020 and Saturday, September 12, requires 45 days period for the examination council to release the results which falls on October 27, exactly yesterday,(Tuesday).
But the Africa sub-regional examination body explained that the postponement was as a result of violence and arson in Nigeria, caused by the recent #EndSARS protest which affected some of its offices and some of its operations across the country.
The State Governments in their respective states imposed curfew to curb the unrest being experienced nationwide after the #EndSARS protests against police brutality.
WAEC on its verified twitter account Confirmed the postponement in the release of the expected results to candidates.
“WASSCE SC 2020 Results Release Date: Dear candidates, the Council had planned to release the results today in fulfilment of our Project 45 but due to the curfew imposed last week, it had to be postponed till next week."
“The exact date will be made known soon,” @waecnigeria tweeted on Wednesday.
The Head of Public Affairs, WAEC Nigeria, Demianus Ojijeogu, confirming the development, explained that the examination body’s “Calabar Office, in Cross River State was looted, vandalised and burnt down by hoodlums.”
Edu-Biznews also recalled that another examination body, the National Examination Council (NECO) had to postpone its recent Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination indefinitely because of the tension generated by the #EndSARS protest nationwide.
