The Olota of Ota, Oba. Adeyemi Obalanlege II, has charged Journalists to always uphold professional integrity, credibility and ethical standards, warning against the practice of demanding financial gratification before writing or publishing news reports.
The monarch gave the charge while receiving the newly elected executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun West Independent Chapel, during a courtesy visit to his palace in Ota, Ogun State.
He urged media practitioners to remain committed to truth, accuracy and responsible reporting, emphasising that journalism should be guided by public interest rather than personal financial considerations.
Oba Obalanlege, maintained that dedication, hard work and consistent delivery of credible, well-researched reports would enhance journalists' professional reputation and earn them recognition within and outside the media industry.
He also encouraged Journalists to embrace multimedia journalism and equip themselves with the requisite digital skills to remain relevant in the rapidly evolving media environment.
According to the monarch, the contemporary Journalist must go beyond traditional news writing by effectively utilising mobile phones and other digital technologies for news gathering, production and dissemination.
He further underscored the importance of public trust, urging practitioners to demonstrate consistency, fairness and professionalism in their engagements with individuals, institutions and communities.
The traditional ruler advised journalists to maintain decorum, while covering assignments and exercise sound professional judgment when responding to criticism, particularly from individuals who may not fully appreciate the ethical obligations and challenges associated with journalism.
Earlier, the newly elected Chairman of the NUJ, Ogun West Independent Chapel, Comrade Olatunji Egbewunmi, said the visit was intentional to formally introduce the new executive members to the monarch and appreciate his continued support for the chapel.
Egbewunmi, described Oba Obalanlege's fatherly guidance and encouragement as valuable to the growth of the chapel, particularly in his capacity as its Grand Patron.
He reaffirmed the executives' commitment to strengthening professional unity, promoting ethical journalism and advancing responsible media practice across Ogun West.
The chairman also expressed appreciation to the monarch for his accessibility and sustained interest in the welfare and development of journalists in the area.
