The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has commenced fresh legal proceedings to recover its guest house in Abeokuta, following a dispute over a 10-year agreement under which the property was reportedly handed over to Comrade Awonubi Oyindamola Oluwabunmi.
The State Chairman of NLC, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola who spoke on the development in an interview with Edu-biznews on Wednesday in Abeokuta, said the Congress decided to pursue the recovery of the property after an inventory committee set up by the union discovered the agreement during an assessment of its assets.
According to him, the committee, led by Comrade Sholarin Roseline, who is chairman of the NLC inventory committee, reported that the guest house had been ceded to Awonubi Oyindamola for a period of 10 years by a previous leadership of the council led by Comrade Bankole Emmanuel who failed to follow due process in the agreement released to the woman
Benco-Ademola explained that the current leadership subsequently invited her to discuss the agreement after discovering issues surrounding its implementation.
He said the matter later resulted in a lawsuit instituted against the Ogun State Council of the NLC over alleged violations of fundamental human rights by Awonubi Oyindamola
The State NLC Chairman disclosed that the court ruled in favour of the Congress against Awonubi Oyindamola in that case, with a monetary award reportedly made to the claimant.
He added that the state council subsequently reported the development to the national leadership of the NLC, headed by its president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, who directed the leadership to take appropriate legal steps to regain possession of the property.
Benco-Ademola said the council had secured November 25, 2026, as the commencement date for the hearing of its current case at High Court 2 of the Ogun State High Court sitting in Abeokuta
He expressed optimism having won the preview suit instituted in favour of the Congress, describing the dispute as one involving the recovery of a property belonging to the NLC in the state
According to him, the council is determined to reclaim the guest house for the benefit of workers across Ogun State rather than allow it to remain under the control of a few individuals.
"We are putting up this case in order to reclaim the property back to the Congress for the use and benefit of every worker in the state," he stated
He maintained that the guest house was an asset of the NLC and should serve the collective interests of workers.
The labour leader explained that the current legal action differs from the earlier fundamental human rights suit, noting that the immediate objective is to secure possession of the guest house.
He said the council had engaged in consultations and adopted legal strategies to pursue the matter, adding that the current proceedings followed directives from the national leadership
He, however, acknowledged that the final decision rests with the court.
The outcome of the November 25 hearing is expected to be a significant step in determining the next phase of the dispute over the Ogun NLC guest house.
