Eselu Suspension :MURIC Appeals To Ogun Govt For Reinstatement of Oba Akinyemi To Strengthen Public Confidence

Muslim Rights Concern has appealed to the Ogun State Government to reconsider the suspension of Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area on October 20, 2026 for alleged involvement in partisan politics, saying his reinstatement will strengthen public confidence in governance of the State, ahead of the 2027 general election

Ogun State Chairman of MURIC, Ustaadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao making the appeal in a statement on Sunday by its State Secretary, Ambassador Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, stressed the need for a review of the circumstances surrounding the decision taken by government on the suspension of the monarch

The Rights group emphasized the need to ensure consistent application of the law to all traditional rulers, without discrimination based on political affiliation, personal relationships, or perceived loyalty.

MURIC in the statement called on government to provide clarity and transparency regarding the legal and factual basis for the suspension, while respecting due process and the rights of all parties concerned.

Ogun State Government according to the group, must protect the dignity and independence of traditional institutions by ensuring that disciplinary measures against monarchs are not arbitrary or perceived as politically motivated

MURIC maintained that government must promote dialogue and reconciliation between it and the affected monarch, and other relevant community stakeholders to prevent unnecessary tension and restore public confidence

The statement further reads in part:
"We make these appeals not to encourage lawlessness or to undermine the authority of the Ogun State Government, but to strengthen public confidence in governance and ensure that justice is not only administered but is also perceived to be fair."

"Let it be clearly understood that our concern is not whether a traditional ruler should be above the law. No one should be above the law. Our concern is whether the law is being applied consistently, fairly, and in a manner that protects the dignity of the institutions it regulates."

"As we conclude, we are reminded of a timeless truth, people may forget what you do and what you say, but they will not easily forget how your actions made them feel"

"Every individual will eventually become part of history, and history itself will one day become a memory. What will endure is the legacy we leave behind"

"We therefore urge the Ogun State Government to choose the path of fairness over perceived political retaliation, reconciliation over confrontation, and justice over any appearance of selective treatment"

"The throne deserves protection. The law deserves respect. The people deserve justice. And leadership deserves to be remembered for fairness, not bitterness", the statement concluded
