The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo has unveiled an eight-pillar strategic vision aimed at positioning the University as a globally competitive, locally relevant, and future-ready institution.
The Professor of Counselling Psychology unveiled the vision over the weekend , while addressing the Committee of Provosts, Deans and Directors (COPDD) at the Senate Chamber.
She described the committee as the University’s most strategic academic leadership committee after Senate, charging its members to champion the strategic priorities within their respective units.
The Vice-Chancellor listed the eight pillar to include Academic excellence and quality assurance*; *Research, innovation and global visibility, *Financial sustainability and resource mobilisation and Infrastructure and digital transformation*
Others according to her, are Staff welfare and industrial harmony*; *Student welfare, mentorship and employability, Governance, integrity and institutional visibility*; and *Community engagement and societal impact*.
Under academic excellence, the University will pursue full accreditation for all programmes while deepening curriculum relevance, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Research and innovation will focus on solution-driven research with measurable societal impact, alongside stronger international research partnerships and ranking visibility.
The vision also prioritises financial sustainability through diversified income streams, including grants, endowments, consultancy and strategic partnerships.
In infrastructure and digital transformation, the University will deploy Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools to enhance teaching and administration across its campuses.
The Vice-Chancellor also announced plans to establish at least one smart classroom in every faculty within the next year.
Staff welfare and industrial harmony will be strengthened through merit-based staff development, inclusive dialogue with unions and sustained institutional capacity building, while student welfare will be supported through mentorship, employability initiatives and mental health support.
The administration will also prioritise integrity, institutional leadership and stronger engagement with the University’s host communities and the wider society.
As an immediate step towards translating the vision into action, the Vice-Chancellor announced that the administration’s first 100 days would feature university-wide engagement and structured consultations across faculties, schools, centres, institutes and directorates in the Ojo, Epe, Ikeja and Badagry campuses, as well as with staff and student unions.
Professor Badejo called on members of the COPDD to support the strategic priorities through inclusive leadership and an open-door approach, stressing that their successful implementation would require collective responsibility and sustained commitment across the University.
Meanwhile Lagos State University (LASU) has once again retained its leadership in sustainable university development, retaining its position as the *Overall Best University in West Africa* in the 2026 UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings.
The latest result, announced at the *UI GreenMetric Sustainable University Rankings 2026 Results and Awards Ceremony* in Baku, Azerbaijan, places LASU *493rd globally among 2,016 institutions across 110 countries*, representing a remarkable advancement from its 760th position in the 2025 ranking.
The latest feat extends LASU's remarkable run at the summit of sustainable university rankings in West Africa.
Since the University joined the UI GreenMetric ranking in 2022, LASU has consistently emerged as the *No. 1 university in West Africa*, retaining the position for the *fifth consecutive ranking cycle (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026)*.
Beyond its sustained regional leadership, the 2026 result represents a significant leap in LASU's global sustainability standing.
The University has progressed from *799th globally in 2024, to 760th in 2025, and now to 493rd in 2026*, an advancement of 267 places in just one year and 306 places from its 2024 position.
The 2026 UI GreenMetric ranking assesses universities on sustainability performance across key areas including *Setting and Infrastructure, Energy and Climate Change, Waste, Water, Transportation, Education, and Governance and Digitalisation*. LASU's 2026 performance reflects the University's continuing institutional commitment to embedding sustainability, environmental responsibility, and innovative practices across its operations.
In August 2026, LASU also received international recognition for its contribution to the UI GreenMetric network, with its *National and Regional Coordinatorship renewed*, alongside its elevation to *Co-Chairmanship of key sessions at UI GreenMetric international events for the 2026/2027 academic session*.
The latest achievement reflects the collective efforts of the University Management, staff, students and the various units and committees contributing to LASU's sustainability agenda. It further reinforces the University's growing profile as a leading institution not only in academic excellence, but also in sustainable development, innovation, responsible governance, and institutional transformation.
