Lagos State University (LASU), has entered a landmark academic partnership with Ernest Bai Koroma University of Science and Technology (EBKUST), Sierra Leone, to screen and train PhD candidates for the West African institution.
The two institutions held strategic meeting of stakeholders from both universities held on Thursday, September 3, 2025, at the Senate Chamber, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, LASU Main Campus, Ojo.
Declaring the session open, LASU Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, described the collaboration as “historic” the first time LASU would be running postgraduate programmes on behalf of another university outside Nigeria.
Speaking through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academics), Professor Oseni Afisi , the Vice-Chancellor, disclosed attention of EBKUST, was drawn to LASU after following the university’s academic progress online, through its website.
“Our partners see LASU as a bedrock on which they can build their university. We can not take this credit alone. It goes to every member of staff who toils day and night to keep the system working,” she stated.
Professor Olatunji-Bello charged all stakeholders to uphold quality and standards, noting that the virtual delivery of lectures would further boost LASU’s global visibility.
“The ball is in our court. Let’s give this our best shot. Don’t compromise on standard and quality assurance,” she said.
In his welcome address, the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Professor Ibrahim Olateju said the partnership was proof of LASU’s growing internationalisation drive.
He expressed confidence that LASU has both the manpower and technical capacity to deliver.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of EBKUST, Maburaka Campus, Professor Enoch Iortyorm stated that interest was already high, with close to fifty applicants signed up and more still applying.
He urged LASU to set up a dedicated 24-hour technical support team for the virtual programme to handle glitches and enquiries, since the candidates are working adults.
“Learning is a two-way thing. The supervisors can learn as well. Research must have substance and be top-notch,” Professor Iortyom added.
The collaboration aligns with LASU’s strategic goals under Professor Olatunji-Bello to position the university as a research and development hub in West Africa.
The interactive session also featured questions, observations, and clarifications on grey areas of the programme.
