Nigeria's Super Falcons have secured their place in the quarter-final of the ongoing CAF Women Africa Nations Cup (WAFCON) after thrashing the Egyptian ladies 6-2 in the last group match played on Wednesday night at
Stade Larbi Zaouli in the city of Casablanca, Morocco
Falcons with superior goals difference over Malawi who narrowly lost 1-2 to Zambia in another match played in the group, as each of the three countries finished with six points while Egypt is at the bottom of the table zero points
Top striker, Asisat Oshoala gave the Nigerians the lead from the penalty spot in the 21st minute, after Essam H. (Egypt) had been booked for a foul.
Gift Monday who later came in as a substitute for Oshoala, extended the lead with the second goal from a decisive shot in the second minute of the stoppage before the halftime
But the Egyptians reduced the tally in the eight minutes within the opening half of the encounter when Nadine Ghazi converted a penalty kick, sending Nigeria’s goalkeeper the wrong way.to make it 2-1 before halftime
The referee had awarded the penalty to Egypt, after Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie was booked for a foul on an Egyptian.
In the remaining half of the thrilling match, Substitute Uchenna Kanu grabbed the third goal for Nigeria, capitalising on the opening by the Egyptian defenders to place the ball into the back of the net in the 57th minute
Super Falcons’ Christy Ucheibe placed the ball in the right corner and sent the Egyptian keeper the wrong way for the fourth goal in the 81st minute from the penalty spot
However, Nadine Ghazi scored second goal for Egypt in the 84th minute, to make 4-2 with less than six minutes to end the tie
In the 86th minute, Joy Omewa came in for Rinsola Babajide before 90+1 – captain Rashidat Ajibade confidently converted another penalty awarded to the team to give Nigeria a convincing lead. It’s Nigeria 5 – 2 Egypt in the first minute of the stoppage time
Rashidat Ajibade later provided the assist for Substitute Joy Omewa to score the sixth goal in the 94+4 minutes of the match
The Justin Madugu tutored side who were stunned by the debutants, Malawi side later won their two subsequent matches in the group against Zambia and Egypt , to keep the hope of the world cup qualification alive
