A Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Ikeja, Oladipo Adewole has called for establishment of integrated trauma system for Lagos State, just as he stressed the need for Lagos State Trauma System Authority under the Ministry of Health to administer the system.
The Head of Orthopedic Department, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital gave the recommendation while the delivery University's 125th Inaugural Lecture titled *"From Limping Steps to Confident Strides: A Journey of an Academic Orthopaedic Surgeon"*, held on Tuesday inside the Buba Marwa Auditorium on the Ojo main campus of LASU
The establishment is to make treatment of deformities in children more accessible for the people in Nigeria's commercial city
He explained that the establishment of the State Trauma System Authority would ensure designation of the trauma centres from Level I-IV, with formalised referral pathways and inter-hospital transfer protocols.
According him, One level I trauma centre will be located in Lagos State (LASUTH) while One level II trauma centre in each senatorial district across the state
The Head of Orthopedic unit in the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Lagos State University College of Medicine added that there would be One level III trauma centre in each Local Government area in addition to One functional level IV trauma centre in each Local Council Development Area (LCDA)
The Don also emphasized the revitalization of the Lagos State Limb Deformity Correction Programme, saying there should be continuous monitoring of children in schools to identify those with limb deformities and refer them to secondary healthcare institutions.
"School heath programmes should include provision of one meal with high calcium content (e.g. dairy, leafy greens and soft-boned fish)"
"Insurance coverage for limb deformity correction surgery under the Lagos State Health Insurance Programme (Ilera-Eko) and .Institutionalised sub-specialty Orthopaedic training in LASUTH, he recommended
The Health Expert advocated Ponseti method as most effective in correcting neglected clubfoot among children of above walking age
"This lecture is a summary of my efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat medical conditions that cause people to walk with a limping gait. This is also the story of my personal academic journey, from limping steps to confident strides. I sincerely hope that I have contributed positively to Atiro’s acceptance in day-to-day life", he concluded
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof.Ibilola Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello who presided over the Inaugural Lecture, lauded numerous contributions to the Orthopedic Surgery in the country
