The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) in Ogun State Chapter has expressed concern over rising cases of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria, calling for establishment of a special court to speed up the prosecution of offenders
The Muslim rights group described as a worrisome, a situation where citizens live under the constant threat of abduction, violence and death. saying
development becomes impossible in a state of fear, confusion, insecurity and uncertainty
The State Chairman of MURIC , Ustaadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao made the call in a statement made available to the media by the State Secretary, Ambassador Olaleye Rasheed Damilare, accusing government at all levels of failing in their constitutional responsibilities of protecting, preserving and promoting the fundamental rights and security of Nigerian citizens.
MURIC explained that it continuous agitation for the establishment of a Special Court dedicated to terrorism, kidnapping and banditry cases. would ensure speedy trials, swift justice and stronger deterrence against criminal activities.
The group expressed worry over the continued silence and delay in establishing these courts, saying it raise serious questions that patriotic Nigerians must ask.
"We ask a simple but painful question: If those innocent children were the sons and daughters of powerful politicians and top government officials, would they still be in captivity today?*
Kidnapping according to MURIC, has gradually transformed into a lucrative criminal enterprise, saying victims are forced to pay huge ransoms for their freedom, while some are murdered even after payments have been made.
Ogun State according to the group, recently witnessed a disturbing development with the arrest of the Seriki Fulani of Ijebu-Ode following allegations surrounding a ransom bag reportedly recovered in his residence, while some suspects allegedly escaped through nearby bushes.
"Cases of this nature should not be subjected to endless legal delays. Justice delayed is justice denied. A Special Court would ensure that investigations, prosecutions and judgments are handled expeditiously and transparently in accordance with the law"
"Our position is not driven by emotion, sentiment or prejudice. It is driven by our commitment to justice, peace and national security", the group maintained
"As Nigerians, we are deeply disturbed that more than two weeks after the abduction of pupils and their teachers, many victims remain in captivity. Their families continue to endure unbearable pain, uncertainty and emotional trauma",
These barbaric and inhumane trend must be decisively confronted", the group decried
