MURIC Ogun State Blames State Governments , FG, For Failing To Declare Hijrah Holiday, Raises Questions On Inclusivity

As the crescent of a new Islamic year emerged and millions of Muslims across the world exchanged greetings and prayers, one question quietly lingered in the minds of many faithful in Ogun State: *When will the significance of the Islamic calendar receive the recognition it deserves in Ogun State in particular and Nigeria in general?* 

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Ogun State Chapter, joins the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO), Ogun State, and the entire Muslim Ummah in celebrating the commencement of Hijrah 1448AH, which began on Tuesday, 16th June 2026, corresponding to 1st Muharram 1448AH.

 *This was contained in a statement issued by the State Chairman of MURIC, Ustaadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao, and made public by the State Secretary, Ambassador Olaleye Rasheed Damilare.* 

It reads;

Hijrah is not merely the beginning of another year in the Islamic calendar. It symbolizes sacrifice, perseverance, faith and the triumph of hope over adversity. It reminds Muslims of the historic migration of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the lessons of unity, patience and purposeful leadership.

While Muslims across several states in the federation celebrated the commencement of the New Islamic Year with official recognition and public holidays, Muslims in Ogun State observed the occasion while carrying on with their normal duties and obligations.

 *This reality once again brings to the fore the need for inclusive governance and equitable recognition of the religious diversity that characterizes our nation. Whenever MURIC advocates fairness and balanced representation, some erroneously perceive such interventions as political. We have consistently maintained that issues affecting the welfare and rights of Muslims cannot be separated from responsible civic engagement.* 

We always maintained that public holidays and national observances should reflect the country's pluralistic nature and promote mutual respect among adherents of all faiths.

 *When Muslims peacefully demand recognition of their legitimate rights, such aspirations should not be misconstrued. Advocacy for justice and inclusiveness is neither fanaticism nor confrontation, rather, it is a constitutional right and a necessary ingredient for peaceful coexistence.* 

We affirm that despite attempts by detractors to undermine our activities, the organization remains committed to serving as a voice for the rights of Muslims and promoting constructive engagement with government and stakeholders.

 *The pertinent question remains: why have repeated calls by various Islamic bodies for official recognition of Hijrah celebrations in Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole continued to receive no attention at all? This question deserves sincere reflection and dialogue.* 

We urge Muslims to remain united, law-abiding and politically conscious.

As citizens, Muslims must continue to participate actively in the democratic process. They should obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), engage responsibly and support leaders who uphold justice, fairness and religious harmony.

 History teaches us that power and privilege are transient, but accountability before Allah is eternal.

MURIC Ogun State congratulates the League of Imams (Ogun State branch) and the entire Muslim Ummah on the occasion of Hijrah 1448 AH and prays that the new Islamic year will usher in peace, prosperity, justice and greater unity among Nigerians.
