A scholar in the Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Lagos State University, Dr Tolulope Ewekeye has stressed the need for wider adoption and scientific validation of traditional Yoruba medicine to address common health challenges in Nigeria.
Dr Ewekeye was speaking at the Trado-medics Expo 2026*, organised under the course ENT 1000: Yoruba Traditional Health Care Systems, held at the open space, Faculty of Arts, LASU Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.
The guest speaker argued that traditional medicine holds a promising future for Nigeria and beyond, noting that advances in scientific research have addressed long-standing concerns around dosage and toxicity.
“Through scientific studies, the issue of toxicity has been managed. With the right plant combinations and accurate dosage, traditional medicine can be safe and effective. The plants and their parts we need are readily available around us," Dr Ewekeye explained
He commended students/groups that presented herbal remedies developed to manage conditions such as hypertension, measles, ulcer, piles, and other ailments during the exposition.
