Management of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, has reaffirmed the ban on the operation and movement of commercial motorcycles (popularly known as Okada) within the Polytechnic campus.
The decision, which is in line with global best practices in campus security and safety management, has been reinforced following the recent increase in cases of theft of Polytechnic property and as a proactive security measure aimed at safeguarding lives and property.
Head, Public Relations & Protocol of the institution, Yemi Ajibola who announced this in a statement made available to Edu-biznews on Saturday, also said the measure, intended to address growing security concerns, including reports of kidnapping and other criminal activities often associated with the use of motorcycles.
It will be recalled that the Management had earlier prohibited the entry of motorcycles, as well as tinted and unmarked vehicles, into the Polytechnic. This informed the intensified stop-and-search operations currently being carried out by the Security Unit at the entry and exit points to the campus.
Consequently, all members of staff, students, visitors, and the general public are hereby enjoined to cooperate fully with the Security Unit to ensure effective compliance with and enforcement of this directive.
As alternative means of transportation within the campus, tricycles and intra-campus cab services have been approved to convey passengers from the Polytechnic gate to various destinations within the institution.
The Management in the statement maintained that the institution remained committed to ensuring the safety, welfare, and well-being of staff and students as part of its ongoing repositioning and rebranding agenda for the Polytechnic.
