Library Experts including Dr. (Mrs) Christy Olabisi Adeeko, Dr. Saheed Adesina Olawepo and Provost of Civil Defence College of Security Management, Abeokuta, Assistant Commandant-General Akintelure Niyi Olufisayo have stressed the need for learners to always embrace reading culture and avoid any form of shortcut, if they want to succeed in academic pursuits and actualize their future ambition in life
They gave the charge in their separate speeches on Monday during the second edition of Reading Competition for learners in secondary schools, jointly organized by TASCOND Darusallam Academy, Library Resources and Information Centre of the Civil Defence College of Security Management and the Ogun State chapter of Nigerian Library Association held at the college's main hall in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, to celebrate the 2026 World Book Day which has its theme "Reading As The Culture of Growth And Development In The Life of Children: Kindly Build It On Your Own"
Dr. Adeeko , the Librarian of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, Isara-Remo, in her keynote speech, emphasized the importance of reading culture among school children, saying it will enhanced their personal growth, knowledge, self confidence and imagination or boost ability to think fast as well as speaking and writing skills
"Your future will not be built by luck, shortcut or excuses, it will be built by knowledge based on reading culture", she stated
The keynote Speaker urged the learners to make the library , a treasure house while asking teachers in schools and parents at home to encourage learners to imbibe reading culture, so as to expand their knowledge about everything around them
Similarly, Dr. Olawepo, who is the Vice-Chairman of the State chapter of Nigerian Library Association and the Librarian of the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, emphasized the need for schools to ensure proper stocked of libraries with books that be managed by qualified librarian to encourage reading culture among school children
Provost of the host college, represented by its Commandment of Corps/Training 21C College Provost, Alhaja Sakirat Toyin Adeyinka re-echoed the importance of reading culture, saying school children must make reading a regular habit for them to succeed in their studies
In the writing and reading competition among schools, the duo of Theocentric Ojuokanla and Ise-oluwa Ehijuba of Defenders Model College Abeokuta won the trophy with 105 points, closely followed by the duo of Toluwanimi Olude and Afolusayo Taiwo of Patterson Memorial Baptist Grammar School, Abeokuta who finished in second position with 104 points while both Oluwarogbayimika Richard and Oluwadarasimi Jemiri of Graceland Model Secondary School came third with 97 points
Also the likes of Widad Asade and Mujeeb Adenekan of IMA International Model College, Abeokuta finished in the fourth position with 78 points while both Nafeesah Olojede and Aisha Ogunfowodu of Ar-Risalah Academy, Abeokuta, came fifth with 59 points
Librarian of the host college, Alhaji Taofiq Sekoni-Dairo was full of praises for participants in the reading competition from the invited schools , assuring them of better package in the future edition of competition.
He revealed the plan to introduce Yoruba reading and writing in the subsequent edition of the competition while appreciating the guests and other sponsors of the event including the Judge Bola Ajibola Legacy Project, Madojutimi Restaurant, Lotus Capital Investment, Defender Schools, Oluwalogbon Electronics, Wole Soyinka International Cultural Heritage Project, Olam International Limited, The College Likeminds ,Kay Motors Nigeria Limited as well as Iyadunni and Kaywasky Auto Services
