The Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has formally received a delegation from the LASU Epe Campus following the remarkable achievement of a student, Mr Goodness Ukwedje who secured a ₦50 million venture capital grant at a highly competitive national programme.
The student was received during a brief ceremony held inside the Conference Room on the 6th Floor of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, Main Campus, Ojo, Lagos.
Leading the delegation, the Head of Campus, Epe, Professor Elkanah Oyetunji , introduced Ukwedje , a 300-level student of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, describing his success as a testament to resilience, innovation, and the strong academic culture of the campus.
He noted that the achievement underscores the University’s commitment to producing graduates equipped to solve real-world challenges, adding that the feat brings significant recognition to LASU.
Further highlighting the scale of the accomplishment, the Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor K.F.K. Oyedeko stated that Ukwedje emerged successful from a pool of over 30,000 applicants nationwide.
He described the ₦50 million grant win as a “rare and outstanding distinction,” reflecting both the student’s ingenuity and the quality of training within the Faculty.
He reaffirmed the Faculty’s continued focus on innovation, research, and entrepreneurship as key drivers of student success.
In his remarks, Mr Goodness Ukwedje expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for her support and introduced his award-winning project, ‘D-Rentals’ - a verified housing platform designed to eliminate accommodation fraud targeting new students.
He explained that many students fall victim to deceptive agents who collect inspection fees without delivering results, often leading to repeated financial losses.
The platform aims to provide a secure and transparent system connecting students directly with verified housing options.
He noted that the application is currently in development and is scheduled for launch in the next academic session, after which he presented the award certificate to the Vice-Chancellor.
In her response, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated Mr Taiwo Goodness *Ukwedje, describing the ₦50 million grant win as a “landmark achievement” and a clear demonstration of world-class potential.
She commended the Epe Campus leadership and Faculty of Engineering for their dedication to mentorship and academic excellence, noting that the success reflects the strength of LASU’s teaching and innovation ecosystem.
“This achievement is a strong testament to the quality of education and mentorship we provide at Lagos State University,” she stated.
She encouraged the student to deploy the grant strategically towards the successful development of his innovation and assured him of the University’s continued institutional support.
Other members of the delegation included Professor Gabriel O. Shonaike , Professor A. I. Yussuff, Professor O. P. Akinyemi , Professor Nurudeen A. Raji, Dr L. Salami , and Mr S. T. Whesu
The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr Samuel Otesanya , Senior Deputy Registrar, representing the University Registrar.
