Organized labour in Ogun State has renewed its call for establishment of a Ministry Labour for effective coordination, administration, and delivery of labour-related services, policies, and programmes for the overall welfare and productivity of workers in the State.
Chairman of the State Council of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Hameed Benco-Ademola and his counter-part from the Trade Union Congress, Comrade Akeem Lasisi made the call in their separate remarks at this year's May Day celebration held over the weekend at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta, the State capital
The NLC Chairman who had earlier made the call in the previous event, said that the creation of the ministry and appointment of Special Advisers on Labour Matters would provide strategic guidance, facilitate harmonious industrial relations, and ensure prompt attention to issues affecting workers.
"This step will further strengthen government–labour engagement and promote industrial peace and sustainable development", he stated
Benco-Ademola also stressed the need for domestication of the Citizens’ Rights Law in Ogun State, as a strategic
step towards improving governance, accountability, and the overall quality
of life of the citizenry.
He equally called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to ensure completion of all unfinished or abandoned infrastructural projects across the State, to ensure optimal utilization of public resources and delivery of dividends of democracy to the people
Similarly, the State Chairman of TUC emphasized the need for the governor to appoint Commissioner for Labour and Establishment, as well as a Special Adviser on Labour Welfare and Relations
"The absence of these critical offices has created a noticeable gap in the effective coordination and management of labour-related matters within the State", Lasisi stated
These positions according to him, play a pivotal role in fostering harmonious relationships between the government and the workforce, ensuring prompt resolution of industrial disputes, and advancing policies that promote workers’ welfare and productivity.
"Given the dynamic nature of labour relations and the increasing demands of the workforce, these roles must be filled by competent, experienced individuals who can serve as a bridge between the government and organized labour. Their presence will undoubtedly enhance dialogue, strengthen trust, and contribute to industrial peace and socio-economic development in Ogun State", the State TUC boss maintained
