Lagos State University (LASU) Trail Blazers have failed to defend their title after suffering a heartbreaking 4-2 penalty defeat to neighbours, Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), in the final of the 2026 UNITECOL Football Cup
The highly anticipated showdown, played at the University of Lagos (Unilag) Sports Centre, Akoka, delivered intensity, pace, and drama from start to finish.
Both sides battled fiercely in an end-to-end contest, but neither could find the decisive breakthrough in regulation time, as the goalkeepers produced heroic performances to keep the scoreline level.
The extra time brought even more tension, with chances falling at both ends. LASU came closest to snatching victory in the closing moments, when Jeremiah Chukwusa* latched onto a clever pass from Timilehin Jagun JAGUN*, only to see his effort drift agonisingly wide.
With the deadlock unbroken, the final was decided from the penalty spot. The defending champions LASU converted two (2) of their kicks, while LASUED held their nerve perfectly, converting four (4) penalties to clinch the *2026 UNITECOL crown*.
Earlier in the third-place playoff, hosts University of Lagos (Unilag) edged YABATECH 9-8, on penalties after both teams played out a 1-1 draw across regulation and extra time.
The LASU Blazers won the underlisted awards at the just concluded 2026 UNITECOL competition:
Isiaka Seyon - Best Goalkeeper
Jeremiah Chukwusa - Highest Goal Scorer (5)
Malik Ahmed - Best Midfielder
*Engagement team of the tournament*
*LASU is billed to host the 2027 edition of the competition*.
