Mountain Top Schools, Lagos, done Nigeria proud, after earning continental recognition, following an impressive outing at the African Spelling Bee Championship held in Harare, where Team Nigeria emerged 1st runner-up among over 30 participating African countries.
The highly competitive championship featured rigorous elimination stages and high-pressure speed rounds that tested the spelling prowess, confidence, and composure of young contestants drawn from across the continent.
Nigeria’s remarkable performance was powered by five exceptional students selected through the national qualifying process organised by the Nigeria Spelling Bee.
Standing out among them was 10-year-old Idoghor Oghenetano of Mountain Top Schools, who emerged as the youngest contestant in the entire competition.
Oghenetano delivered an extraordinary performance during the crucial speed round by correctly spelling 17 out of 20 words within one minute, a feat that significantly boosted Nigeria’s overall score and helped secure the country’s continental ranking with 15.00 points.
At the end of the contest, Team South Africa finished in first place with 15.60 points, while host nation Zimbabwe came third, making the three countries Africa’s representatives at the forthcoming global championship.
Other Nigerian contestants also distinguished themselves with outstanding performances throughout the competition.
Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti, emerged Junior Category Champion after displaying exceptional brilliance and consistency.
Abdurrahman Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, secured third place in the Junior category to further strengthen Nigeria’s medal haul.
Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba, impressed with resilience and determination through difficult elimination rounds, while Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International School, Ilorin, contributed calm precision and focus that reinforced Nigeria’s strong finish.
Following the outstanding continental performance, Oghenetano and his teammates — Oluwadamilola Adeolu, Abdurrahman Yusuf, Chinedu Okediachi, and Maryam Yusuf — have now qualified to represent Africa at the World Spelling Bee Championship scheduled for Shanghai in July 2026.
The achievement has also generated excitement within the Mountain Top Schools community.
Speaking during the Power Must Change Hands programme held at the Prayer City on April 4, 2026, the Principal, Mrs. Adeoti Ogunsusi, praised the school’s young ambassador and expressed appreciation to the Proprietor, Dr. D. K. Olukoya, who is also the General Overseer of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries, for his unwavering commitment to educational excellence and youth development.
She noted that the achievement reflects the institution’s dedication to nurturing young talents capable of competing successfully on the global stage.
