A 34-megawatt Powergen Independent Power Project (IPP) alongside several major infrastructure projects in Ogun State have been commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as part of Governor Dapo Abiodun's administration commitment to boost industrial growth and energy sufficiency in the state
The commissioning, conducted virtually by President Tinubu, took place during a ceremony at the Gateway International Airport, reflecting what officials described as a blend of technology-driven governance and infrastructure expansion.
At the center of the event was the 34MW Powergen IPP, designed to deliver uninterrupted electricity to key government facilities and the surrounding industrial corridor.
The project is a core component of the State’s energy master plan, expected programmed to reduce dependence on the national grid.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy, Engr. Jide Onakoya, said the initiative was made possible by reforms under the Electricity Act 2023, which decentralised the power sector and enabled subnational governments to generate and distribute electricity.
According to him, the project was executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), with gas supply secured through the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited
He added that the plant, located at Onijaganjagan, would be operated by gas-fired turbines and incorporates a distribution framework aimed at delivering power to end users efficiently.
He further disclosed that Sahara Group, through its power subsidiary, would manage the distribution network, including the deployment of smart meters to homes and small businesses to ensure accurate billing.
In addition to the power project, President Tinubu, also commissioned the Gateway International Airport, describing it as a strategic cargo and passenger hub expected to transform logistics and trade in Southwest Nigeria.
Governor Dapo Abiodun said the Airport and the IPP formed part of an integrated development strategy aimed at stimulating economic growth.
“Providing power to our industrial hubs and an Airport for global export wooild create a complete ecosystem for economic prosperity,” the Governor said.
Other projects commissioned include the Special Agro-Processing Zone (SAPZ), Phase II of the Muhammad Buhari Estate (PMB) with 100 units of semidetached and fully detached housing units and completed 200-Bed Gateway medical centre all of which formed part of the administration’s infrastructure blueprint.
In his remarks, President Tinubu commended the State government’s development approach, describing it as a model for the country.
“Today, we are not just commissioning a power plant; we are commissioning a vision. Ogun State continues to prove that with the right leadership, we can light up our nation and fly our commerce to new heights,” Tinubu said.
The ceremony concluded with a physical inspection of the power facility by State officials, marking what stakeholders described as a significant step toward improved energy reliability, reduced business costs and increased investment inflows into the State.
