2027 Poll: SMUGG Calls For Massive Participation Of South-West Muslims

The Southwest Muslims for Good Governance (SMUGG), a Non-Governmental  Organization has stressed the need for Muslims in the geo-political zone and other parts of Nigeria to actively participate in the ongoing democratic process, by registering and obtaining their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general election

Co-Convener of the group, Alhaji Kehinde Lawal and the Secretary-General, Ustadh Tajudeen Jimoh Alao, made the call in a joint statement issued on Tuesday

The group in the statement, emphasized the importance of every citizen participation in the electoral process as provides in the country's constitution

"In a constitutional democracy like ours, civic participation is not merely a right, but a responsibility. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees every eligible citizen the right to vote and be voted for"

"The Electoral Act further strengthens this provision by outlining the legal framework for free, fair, and credible elections", the statement stated

SMUG in the statement, maintained that every Muslim must see obtaining a PVC as both a civic duty and a lawful pathway to shaping leadership and governance

"From an Islamic perspective, participation in governance and societal development is deeply rooted in the principles of justice (adl), consultation (shura), and accountability. Allah (SWT) commands in the Qur’an:"

"Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice…” (Qur’an 4:58)"

"This divine injunction underscores the obligation upon Muslims to ensure that leadership is entrusted to individuals of integrity, competence, and fear of Allah".

"The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also emphasised responsibility in leadership and followership, reminding us that each of you is a shepherd, and each of you is responsible for his flock.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)"

Scholars such as Imam Al-Mawardi and contemporary Islamic thinkers affirm that civic engagement, including voting, falls within the broader objective of promoting public welfare (maslahah) and preventing harm (mafsadah). In modern democratic contexts, the ballot becomes a legitimate tool for enjoining good and discouraging injustice.

SMUG therefore urged all eligible Muslims including men and women, youth and elders—to take immediate steps to register for their PVCs.

The call according to group , is not driven by partisanship, but by a principled commitment to good governance, equity, and societal progress.

*We emphasise that disengagement from the political process creates a vacuum that may be filled by unqualified or self-serving actors. Active and informed participation, however, empowers communities to influence policies, advocate for justice, and secure a better future for generations to come"

"We pray that Almighty Allah (SWT) grants our community wisdom, unity, and sincerity in all our civic engagements. May He guide us to choose leaders who will uphold justice, protect the rights of all citizens, and govern with fear of Allah. May our efforts contribute to peace, stability, and prosperity in our nation", the statement concluded
